The European Measuring Instruments Directive comes into force on October 30th, 2006. It regulates the requirements concerning various measuring device types and their placing on the market in a new way.
The directive is relevant for the following devices from our portfolio:

1. Active electrical energy meters
2. Heat meters
3. Gas meters

The following pages inform you about how Landis+Gyr implements the MID.

The Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) will be implemented in national legislations by 30 October 2006. The MID describes the requirements for 10 measuring instrument categories (electricity, heat and gas meters, amongst others) to be used in the European market and defines their placing on the market.

As far as electricity meters are concerned, the MID is limited to active electrical energy meters intended for residential, commercial and light industrial use. Meters of this category put in circulation from 30 October, 2006, have to comply with the MID. There is a 10-year transitional period for meters that have been accredited according to the current system. Landis+Gyr will have these meters approved according to MID by the end of 2006.

Reactive energy and grid meters are not covered by MID. The placing on the market of these meters remains unchanged. There are several ways to place meters on the market according to MID. Landis+Gyr intends to follow the conformity procedure according to MID Annex MI-003, Module B and D:

Module B
Landis+Gyr is requesting a type test according to MID for all currently approved meters still offered. This should be finished by the end of the year.

Module D
So called notified bodies (probably e.g. METAS in Switzerland, PTB in Germany, …) will certify the QS-System of Landis+Gyr when all conditions of module D of MID are met. Regular checks will ensure these requirements are constantly met.

Placing on the market
According to current procedures, a meter can be placed on the market if it is type approved and has been calibrated by an authorized body. MID makes it possible to put every meter into use for which the manufacturer has declared its conformity with MID.
The supervision of meters in the network and re-calibration remain subject to national regulations.

Re-calibration
Re-calibration lies outside of the scope of MID and is still regulated by national legislation. Some countries are planning an implementation of these regulations simultaneously to the coming into effect of the MID or shortly afterwards.

There are no substantial changes for you as a customer of Landis+Gyr regarding meter use and operation. Our meters comply with all relevant standards and regulations now and in future.
