ACEA selects Landis+Gyr‘s Advanced Metering Technology

Rome‘s municipal energy supplier, ACEA, has chosen Landis+Gyr as technology partner for its large-scale Advanced Metering roll out. ACEA will have fully implemented the system by 2009 and will install 1.5 million new electricity meters from Landis+Gyr. This solution enables automatic meter reading (AMR), the management of loads and customers, as well as the monitoring and control of the low-voltage network.

ACEA’s Chief Executive Officer explains why they were interested in Advanced Metering: "First, we wanted to improve our quality of service. Secondly, we needed to optimize our processes and, thirdly, we wanted better low-voltage network monitoring and control, thus providing a higher quality for our end-customers.” The extended system functionality, which not only includes load control and distribution network monitoring but also provides direct information to customers with an in-house-display which offers information concerning energy consumption, makes ACEA a pioneer in the use of advanced metering solutions.

Close cooperation

The system solution was created in close cooperation between ACEA, Landis+Gyr Italy and BTicino. Landis+Gyr developed the single- and polyphase meters with integrated PLC communication and multi-rate tariff capabilities, which will be required in Italy from 2007. Additional Landis+Gyr developments include the PLC communication infrastructure and the “Low-Voltage Automation Control System” to monitor the low-voltage distribution network.

The extended functionality and the associated financial benefits make this Advanced Metering solution economically interesting and combined with the positive experience made at Acea, have created interest from many other Italian and European energy suppliers.
